Chapter Thirteen

THE SENSATION OF Ilana’s eyes boring into Emily’s back was like a weight as Adrasta’s guards escorted her away. She turned and met the vampire’s liquid blue gaze and found regret there. Maybe Ilana wasn’t quite the monster she’d initially thought. Emily raced forward and held her head high. Human slaves nearby looked at her and then quickly away. They weren’t quite fast enough to hide the pity. Emily frowned. Why did she feel like she’d suddenly gone from the frying pan into the open, blazing pit?

Princess Adrasta led the party as they traveled toward the castle. Emily took the opportunity to get a good look at Saqqara. Other than the mines and the large containment building where the vampires held victims for the hunt, the city was like something out of a futuristic novel. Flying machines filled the airways overhead, following an obscure type of order that prevented mishaps. Structures all around shone like polished crystal and stretched up high overhead, albeit not as high as the air cars. Underfoot, Emily noticed the slate pavement that would require a quarry of epic proportions. Not to mention the technology and precision required to cut each interlocking piece, Emily thought. The stone covered all pathways throughout the city for as far as she could see.

Up ahead, the castle loomed nearer. Emily had never thought she’d see one outside of a movie. Turrets rose proudly from the perimeter of the structure and she wondered if they housed containment cells at the top. Emily spotted a larger, square construct that she thought might be a keep. The edifice even held a drawbridge that was currently down. Although there was no rank and disgusting water, a deep, empty pit circled the castle. Emily recognized the seeming strategic importance of the pit, but decided it was more symbolic than anything considering these creatures could fly.

Speaking of flying, she mused, gazing upward once again. Why did the vampires require air ships if they could fly on their own?

The answer didn’t appear to be forthcoming and Emily forgot the issue as they started across the wooden planks of the drawbridge. Adrasta, who had ignored her up to this point, unexpectedly shouted, “Bathe her.”

The simple command generated unanticipated activity, and Adrasta continued on her way without pause. Simultaneously, two guards grasped Emily’s upper arms, one of them the female she’d noted earlier. Emily noticed the guard kept a free hand on her sword as she walked, probably to keep it from swinging. Emily gulped nervously as they walked under a heavy portcullis into the castle proper. She might have found the inside of the structure just as impressive as the outside if the guards hauling her down a narrow corridor hadn’t distracted her. Adrasta continued up a steep staircase to the next level and Emily lost sight of the vampire princess.

“You don’t have to keep pulling at me,” Emily said angrily. “I’ll walk if you just tell me where you want me to go.”

The guards did not respond and they did not release her.
